A longstanding Master of both the American College of Physicians and American College of Critical Care Medicine (MACP, MCCM) Dr Paul Pepe is best recognized for practice-changing discoveries, producing >500 full-length publications including numerous (multi-disciplinary) landmark papers [eg, “Chain of Survival” (Circulation 1992), “Auto-PEEP” (ARRD 1982), sepsis as a “syndrome” (Am J Surg 1982), “permissive hypotension” (NEJM 1994), “compressions-only CPR” (Circulation 1997), public AED use (NEJM 2002), routine neuro-intact recovery for pediatric arrest (Resuscitation 2018); “heads-up CPR bundle” (Crit Care Med 2019); COVID cardiac arrest (Lancet 2021); “neuroprotective CPR” (Resuscitation 2022). Between 2020 and 2023 alone, he personally presented over two dozen scientific papers at national/international congresses, most of which garnered “best abstract” recognitions from prestigious societies, including the Society of Critical Care Medicine Star Research Achievement Award which he has received for the past 4 years in a row. In 2022, both the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine regionals and American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) honoured him with top scientific paper recognitions. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Emergency Medicine and EMS subspecialty, he has received numerous multi-disciplinary global honors including Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Silver Anniversary Excellence in Research Award for life-time scientific achievements. While receiving a national award for ground-breaking accomplishments from ACEP in 2005, the U.S. Surgeon General, in presenting the award, was already citing him as “the most accomplished emergency medical services physician of our generation,” remaining so today.
