Stephen Schenkel, MD, MPP

Dr. Schenkel is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He obtained an MD and MPP from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Kennedy School and completed Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Michigan Health System and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. He's been on the faculty at the University of Maryland since then, having served as Clinical Chief of Emergency Medicine at Mercy Medical Cener in downtown Baltimore for 17 years. He is an Associate Editor for JAMA focusing on reviews of table sand figures along with Clinical Review and Education. He is a Deputy Editor for Annals of Emergency Medicine where he has served in a number of roles since 2002, including as distinguished peer reviewer and research methodology editor. Dr. Schenkel has won awards for outstanding teaching and most recently as Chairperson of the Year from the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. His work in administration, patient safety, and more recently, AI informs his teaching, mentoring and publication.
